Each dog is counted once. New York lists a dog again every year its license is renewed, so its records are deduplicated on name, breed, ZIP code, birth year and sex. Names that just repeat the breed (pet shops often license a French Bulldog as “French”) are left out. Dogs recorded as a mix of this breed are included.
