Everything about a Basset is horizontal: the ears, the body, the mood. That gives the portraits a weight the smaller breeds do not have, and a comic timing that needs no help from the costume.
Warm browns and heavy shadow. Best somewhere low and lived-in, above a sofa or a sideboard rather than in a bright hallway.
